We are staying in Saint-Leu today. An early morning tour of the harbor at the time of diving schools; the fishermen obviously left much earlier to start working at sunrise around 6:30.
After the port we climb to the chapel of Our Lady of Salette, place of an important pilgrimage end of September. The main church dedicated to the same virgin, located in the city center has a beautiful wooden frame very well developed. La Réunion brings together people from different religions who apparently live in good agreement. Some people will even practice several cults at the same time to maximize their chances …
In the afternoon we test swimming in the lagoon which is one of the few places on the island where swimming is safe since the abnormally high presence of some sharks has forced the authorities to take quite restrictive precautions. In front of our “case” (in the middle on the photo) the water is perfectly clear and temperate and the depth sufficient to swim and I know that many would like to have this facility at the foot of their home. However, we are worried about the future: the coral reef is practically dead because of the excess fresh water (among others) and its disappearance during cyclones would cause that of the lagoon and would seriously endanger the houses that surround it. .
At the end of the day we discover the Pointe au Sel, where the old salt marshes are undergoing rehabilitation. The surrounding landscape is made of volcanic rocks that one imagines to flow from the volcano and to solidify when arriving in the sea (but we will check this theory to the museum of the volcano in a few days).
